Darlington Civic Theatre closed for 18 months on 31 May 2016 for a major £12 million restoration project made possible by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Darlington Borough Council, corporate and individual giving, and bequests from trusts and foundations. Regenerated and transformed, this Grade II Listed building will re-open in autumn 2017 on its original, expanded site, re-named Darlington Hippodrome, a version of the theatre's original name. Throughout our refurbishment period we are still planning a number of events and projects such as theatre shows in various venues in and around Darlington, exhibitions, and a range of projects and workshops which explore the heritage of our venue.
Please watch this space for details of upcoming projects and check out our What's On page.
The new venue will see a host of new facilities including a café-bar, a number of gallery spaces, better disabled access, including a lift, and improvements to backstage areas to allow the theatre to accommodate larger shows and expand its range of activities, including work for young people and education work. There will be an expanded programme of participatory work for our audiences, including talks, tours or the building, a range of adult participatory projects and volunteering opportunities. The theatre will become a place in Darlington that can act as an arts hub, to have a relaxing cup of coffee, to learn about the history of the theatre, somewhere that can people in the arts as well as a place to be entertained.
