Darlington Civic Theatre closed for 18 months on 31 May 2016 for a major £12 million restoration project made possible by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Darlington Borough Council, corporate and individual giving, and bequests from trusts and foundations. Regenerated and transformed, this Grade II Listed building will re-open in autumn 2017 on its original, expanded site, re-named Darlington Hippodrome, a version of the theatre's original name.
